Baron Corbin sought to make the roughest, toughest team in Survivor Series history, enlisting four Legends no one would dare mess with: Bam Bam Bigelow, Big Boss Man, Razor Ramon and The Undertaker. And Corbin already has an imposing entrance planned. “All five of us could ride bikes to the ring,” Corbin said. “It just would be one group of bada** dudes that are going to wreck shop. I envision that as a team, when we climb in the ring, our opponents just climb out and go home.”

Baron Corbin def. AJ Styles and Tye Dillinger to become the new United States Champion

DETROIT — Technically, Baron Corbin didn’t take any shortcuts to become the new United States Champion. He pinned a Superstar, clean as a whistle, 1-2-3, to earn his first title in WWE. He just didn’t pin the United States Champion.
After SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan added Tye Dillinger to what had originally been a battle between Corbin and reigning titleholder AJ Styles, Corbin found himself outnumbered and targeted by two Superstars who were very open about their mutual respect for one another. And given that Dillinger had finagled his way into the match off the strength of a pinfall win over Corbin this past week on SmackDown LIVE, he posed just as significant a challenge to The Lone Wolf’s championship aspirations as The Phenomenal One.

Yet the former Mr. Money in the Bank played the situation right from the beginning, sitting back and letting Styles and Dillinger tee off on each other before picking the bones of whomever was left standing. In one particularly genius sequence, Corbin even launched Styles into Dillinger, then slid The Phenomenal One face-first into the ring post. The Lone Wolf focused the most intense of his efforts on Styles in order to isolate Dillinger, but The Phenomenal One brawled his way back into the match for a one-on-one throwdown.

While Styles got a little too ambitious with an attempt at a Styles Clash, he was still able to clock Corbin with a knee to the head on the outside. Dillinger immediately threw himself into the fray and found himself trapped in a Calf Crusher, though Corbin pulled him to the outside to prevent a tapout. A three-way brawl followed, and Styles seemed to have the final upper hand after connecting with a Phenomenal Forearm on The Perfect 10. Before AJ could cover Dillinger, however, Corbin viciously booted him out of the ring and covered Tye for the pin.
As Corbin himself mentioned on Talking Smack, that’s a win that won’t sit well with the WWE Universe. And perhaps it shouldn’t. Styles losing his title without getting pinned does seem like something of an injustice. But as Baron Corbin knows better than anyone, life can be unfair, and sometimes respect must be taken.

AJ Styles has said that Baron Corbin is a Superstar who takes shortcuts and squanders opportunities. Well, The Lone Wolf was pretty straightforward with The Phenomenal One about what he wants next: a match at WWE Hell in a Cell for the United States Title.

Corbin is coming off a cruel summer by any measure, but the former Mr. Money in the Bank didn’t let a failed bid for the WWE Championship stop him from going after one of SmackDown LIVE’s most popular Superstars. For weeks, The Lone Wolf meddled in AJ’s affairs, interfering in The Phenomenal One’s planned United States Open Challenge title defense against Tye Dillinger on the Aug. 29 edition of the blue brand before the opening bell could ring. Weeks later, Corbin savagely attacked AJ and Dillinger after Styles successfully defended the star-spangled title in a bout against The Perfect 10. However, before the score could be settled in a one-on-one title showdown between Styles and Corbin on Sept. 18, Dillinger emerged for some payback of his own, brawling with The Lone Wolf and preventing the match from ever getting started.

Styles has remained champion through all of this, but his comments about The Lone Wolf’s work ethic and efficiency finally drove the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal winner off the edge following a bout with Dillinger one week later. Corbin attacked Styles mid-match and, after disposing of The Perfect 10, stated in no uncertain terms that Styles could not defend the title against him one-on-one, leading to the challenge at WWE Hell in a Cell.

In other words, no shortcuts were taken, and Corbin now has his match. What he does with the opportunity is up to him.

Tune in to see who leaves as U.S. Champion at WWE Hell in a Cell, streaming live Sunday, Oct. 8, at 8 ET/5 PT on the award-winning WWE Network.

WWE United States Title Match: Baron Corbin vs. AJ Styles

We go to the ring and out comes WWE United States Champion AJ Styles as we see what led to this match. AJ takes the mic and fans chant his name. AJ says first, Kevin Owens has no idea what he’s done after what he did to Vince McMahon last week. Owens beat up the man responsible for AJ being in WWE and the man responsible for the WWE Universe being here tonight. AJ was happy to hear it would be Owens vs. Shane in Hell In a Cell. AJ is confident that Owens won’t make it out alive. AJ addresses Mr. Shortcut Baron Corbin now and starts talking about some of his recent failures. AJ says Corbin will fail when he steps into the ring with The Phenomenal One. AJ says Corbin can huff and puff but he will never blow down the house that AJ Styles built. The music hits and out comes Baron Corbin.

Corbin hits the ring and we get formal ring introductions from Hamilton. Corbin decks AJ before the bell rings. Corbin unloads in the corner as the referee tries to get him to stop. Tye Dillinger runs out for the save and takes out Corbin’s knee. Tye unloads and sends Corbin out of the ring. Referees run down to break up the fight. Corbin scrambles back into the ring and sells an ankle injury. AJ is slow to recover in the corner as well. Corbin clutches his ankle. AJ attacks Corbin and applies the Calf Crusher. The hold is broken as Corbin rolls to the floor and the referee talks to AJ. Corbin clutches his ankle on the floor as the referee checks on him and AJ’s music plays.

– Back from the break and Baron Corbin is limping backstage when Renee approaches him for comments. Corbin says he feels violated. He was about to win the United States Title but Tye Dillinger cost him. Corbin goes on and says he’s not going to b—h or whine, he’s going to get even.
