AJ Styles defends the United States Championship against Baron Corbin tonight on SmackDown LIVE

After attacking AJ Styles last week on Sin City SmackDown, Baron Corbin will get his opportunity to try and dethrone The Phenomenal One tonight, when he challenges for the United States Championship.
The Lone Wolf has been stalking Styles and his star-spangled championship since the Tuesday after SummerSlam, when he tried to get guaranteed title matches from both Kevin Owens and Styles. When he refereed a title bout between the two later that night, Corbin and Styles butted heads after they inadvertently collided.
Corbin attempted to answer Styles’ United States Open Challenge one week later, but was beaten to the punch by Tye Dillinger. Corbin retaliated by attacking The Perfect 10, but could not keep him from answering the challenge. The blindside attack did keep Dillinger from defeating Styles. Corbin went on to defeat Dillinger the following week, but found himself shut out of the title picture again, as Styles gave a fair rematch to The Perfect 10.
This time, Corbin waited until after The Phenomenal One had defeated Dillinger to make his presence felt on Sin City SmackDown. The Lone Wolf struck, steamrolling over both men before planting Styles into the arena floor with End of Days before announcing his intention of coming for the U.S. Title.
Will The Lone Wolf assert his dominance and capture the United States Championship, or will AJ Styles’ phenomenal reign continue? Find out on SmackDown LIVE, tonight at 8/7 C on USA Network!

It looks like John Cena may be facing Baron Corbin at the WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view on August 20th in Brooklyn.

As tonight’s WWE 205 Live kicked off after SmackDown in Cleveland ended, Mr. Money In the Bank Baron Corbin hit the ring to attack Shinsuke Nakamura. Cena ran back out for the save but Corbin got the upperhand. Cena fought back and ended up putting Corbin through a table with the Attitude Adjustment. Cena then checked on Nakamura and raised his hand as Nakamura’s music hit again.

Sami discusses the issues he had with Corbin and Owens. He knows all about Owens, and has known Corbin since NXT when he was miserable even back then.

-Hell Yeah! Corbin rushes the set and beats the tar out of Sami in amazing fashion. JBL just stands back and tells Braon it’s not his fight. That was fantastic way to close this show and a much needed jolt after a few weak shows since the rosters were shuffled.

‘I tease Corey Taylor for being old’ – meet WWE’s most metal superstar

Baron Corbin bigs up metal bands on Twitter, has a move named after Marilyn Manson, and is throwing down at Wrestlemania this Sunday
Whether you’ve started your daily vocal warm-ups in preparation to boo Roman Reigns out of the building or are simply confused by your old mate from school banging on about ‘justice for AJ’ on Facebook, chances are, you know it’s Wrestlemania this Sunday. WWE’s annual hallmark pay-per-view isn’t just by a distance the biggest event in professional wrestling (or ‘sports entertainment’, as they’ve attempted to rebrand it); it’s one of the single biggest media extravaganzas in the world.

Wrestling has long had a strong relationship with rock and metal culture, from heavy bands through the years soundtracking many of WWE’s flagship shows (Ghost, Baroness and Bring Me The Horizon are just a few names to offer songs for their NXT division in the past year), to UK company Progress branding themselves as ‘punk rock pro wrestling’ and featuring a predominantly metal-savvy crowd at their monthly events.

Plus, whichever way you cut it, wrestling has been stacked with metal-as-hell characters over the years, be it the likes of The Undertaker, Kane and Sting, who could all have walked straight out of a Behemoth video, or Hall Of Fame-level names like Stone Cold Steve Austin, Chris Jericho and Triple H regularly repping rock and metal bands outside of the ring.

This crossover appeal reached its zenith in June last year when Metal Hammer awarded Triple H – a current force behind the scenes at WWE as well as in the ring – with the one-off Spirit Of Lemmy Award as a part of our Golden God celebrations. Presented by Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine live on stage at Download, with the NXT superstars watching from the wings, it felt like a natural peak to a connection between cultures that has run for decades.
Watching from sidestage with his NXT colleagues that day was a man who has since not only moved on to become a major force on WWE’s main roster, but has arguably become metal culture’s most faithful rep on the big stage.

“Going out to Download, that show was insane!” beams Baron Corbin of the whole experience today. “From top to bottom; the mud, the rain, NXT being a part of it all, it was one heck of an experience, that’s for sure.”

While many NXT stars onsite that day were experiencing rock culture close up for the first time, Baron is an old hand at our game. He spent his teenagers years watching the likes of Slipknot, Marilyn Manson and White Zombie at Ozzfest, and when he’s not bigging up bands like Korn, Nothing More and Zeal & Ardor on Twitter, he’s donning the threads of metal clothing mega-label Black Craft to the ring. He even has a signature move – Deep Six – in tribute to the Marilyn Manson song of the same, and last year he made international headlines for an ‘altercation’ with Corey Taylor at a festival in the US. With the Smackdown heavyweight repping metalheads around the world at Wrestlemania this Sunday, we caught up with Baron to talk wrasslin’, festivals and heavy freakin’ metal.

How did you get into metal?

“My dad was a rock ‘n’ roll guy; it’s what he loved, and he got me into that world. He got me into being a part of shows and wanting to go and experience them.”

You got your first taste of festival culture at Ozzfest. What was that like?

“When you go to shows like that, and you get to see bands like Ozzy and Manson and White Zombie and Slipknot and System Of A Down, it just tailors your lifestyle. That rock ‘n’ roll music, the emotion of it, it just moulds you. Watching those stacked lineups, those shows were insane. And a lot of those guys are still putting out great stuff! You see the evolution of those guys, and it continues to tailor me as a person.”
What are you listening to at the moment?

“I continue to love my old stuff – Manson and Slipknot and stuff like that – but right now, I think Ghost are unbelievable. Also, Gojira’s newest album is insane, the best stuff they’ve done. I’m loving that record. Also, Sevendust, Highly Suspect and Nothing More, all those dudes are killing it right now.”

Have you caught up with Corey Taylor recently?

“Haha! Yeah, we still throw stuff back and forth at each other. We’re both competitors in our world. I tease him about being old and that I grew up watching Slipknot at Ozzfest, and we argue about who does better at selling tickets in arenas. That’s great competition for me and him. He’s doing well; I talked to him the other day and they’re working on new stuff for Stone Sour, and that’s gonna be sick. He’s always on the move and doing great stuff.”

The fallout from that whole thing really opened people’s eyes to the crossover between metal and wrestling. Did you realise how big that story was gonna get?

“I had no idea how much that was gonna blow up. I grew up going to rock shows, and the lines of rock ‘n’ roll cross over with wrestling so much. Wrestling is an opportunity to go to a show, be a part of it and feel the emotions, from anger to frustration to sadness to pain – everything that music can make you feel.

So the crossover between audiences is unbelievable, and when the two industries collide, and you have one of their biggest guys in Corey, crashing into one of our biggest superstars, and he hits me in the teeth, it’s cool to see! And maybe it opens a few eyes for people that didn’t look at wrestling or didn’t look at that kind of music, and it helps us both.”

Are you ready for Wrestlemania this Sunday?

“I’m ready to rock! I’m facing Dean Ambrose for the Intercontinental Championship, and hopefully I’m gonna win and start my own little Wrestlemania streak. The lead-up to Wrestlemania is always crazy, because you have all these guys fighting for an opportunity to be a part of the show, and get an opportunity to cement themselves in the Wrestlemania history books. It’s the culmination of your year, the biggest show for us. Last year, my Mania debut was my debut on the main roster, so it was unexpected. I didn’t have time to build up to it or anything like that. It was just, ‘Hey, here’s the fire, jump in’. But I went out, I won the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royale, and that launched me on the main roster and did a lot of great things for me. So Mania is a really good chance to go and show everyone who you are.”

You mentioned making a big impact in your Mania debut last year by winning one of the show’s biggest matches – how hard was it keeping that momentum going?

“I just knew it was an opportunity to project me to where I wanted to go. And it puts pressure on you to perform. I genuinely believe that every single day, you can either get better or you can get worse, and that was one hell of a place to have to get better from. Plus, performing under pressure is when I’m at my best. It’s what I do. I played football [Baron played at college level and was drafted in the NFL], I’m a professional wrestler, I like it when all eyes are on me. I love to be able to rub someone’s face in my own success when they tell me I can’t do something. That’s a little vindictive if you will, but I guess that’s why I’m good at what I do – pissing people off and beating up heroes, haha!”

Wrestlemania takes place this Sunday at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida. You can stream it live on the WWE Network.

Baron Corbin Is WWE’s Next Big Star, So You’d Better Get Used to Him
He’s tall, fast, talks a lot of trash and he held his own against John Cena: The Lone Wolf might be the real deal
Baron Corbin is on a path to becoming one of the biggest stars in the WWE. WWE

Baron Corbin took very little time becoming one of the most polarizing figures in the WWE.
The former Arizona Cardinals offensive lineman has been a pet project of the company since making his re-debut in NXT in late 2014, but with that lofty future planned out for him also came a plethora of criticism from his mic work, to how his work rate leaves much to be desired, that he has no character and so on. At the time, when he was about two years into developmental, these complaints weren’t particularly unjustified, so when he was called up to the main roster and scored a win at WrestleMania 32’s Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal, the criticism only got louder. Too many wrestlers got the big push too soon, and most of them would be happy to fight on the bottom of an indie card these days.
Yet Corbin has been proving himself night in and night out. Almost a year later, it’s getting harder to criticize the Lone Wolf of SmackDown Live; his improvement since joining the big leagues has been obvious to anybody watching, and his star is only on the rise from here.

If there was ever a bigger venue to prove himself, just look at Tuesday night’s blue show main event, which pitted Corbin against John Cena in his first match since returning from being a part-timer (a.k.a. filming a reality show). Although Corbin didn’t pick up the W, the match showed why he has been given a spotlight since the brand split to make a name for himself. He portrayed his character perfectly, right down to insulting and taunting AJ Styles, who was at ringside on commentary; Corbin doesn’t need any help, not even a fellow heel with a bone to pick against Cena. Corbin also showed that he can go toe-to-toe with a guy who has held the world championship belt almost more times than any other wrestler ever to deliver a decent main event on the weekly show, the staple of a rising star. That the match with Cena followed up the genuinely excellent triple threat he had with Styles and Dolph Ziggler last month just puts an exclamation point on his development.

Baron Corbin beats up John Cena on WWE SmackDown Live. WWE

So how did we get here? How did boring ass Baron Corbin of the 10 second squash matches in NXT (matches so boring and short that the crowd would start counting upon the ringing of the bell and not stop until the match was over) turn into one of the hottest prospects in the WWE?

You have to go back to NXT Takeover: Brooklyn, where Samoa Joe guided the big rook to his first “good” match, a showing that truly signaled the arrival of the Lone Wolf. But if you’re looking for the real moment that many will look back on as the first sign that he was comfortable being inside of a ring, look at his match with the debuting Apollo Crews from NXT Takeover: London.
“Go back to Ring of Honor!”
With those six words, Corbin solidified himself as Big Banter, a heel so cocky and out of touch that he would yell that at Apollo Crews…who…never wrestled in Ring of Honor. It didn’t matter whether Corbin planned that line beforehand or whether he botched it in the ring, it was so funny and so dickish that it got over instantly with the so-called Internet Wrestling Community (IWC). It also helped throw the spotlight on Corbin’s in-ring chatter over his promo skills, which are definitely lacking. Yet while he seems to lock up when a mic is in his hands, his smooth workrate and fast wit inside the squared circle showed the potential that seems to finally be put together on SmackDown Live.
Although his aforementioned main event with Cena was solid but didn’t exactly blow any minds, it showed something perhaps more important than that: Corbin can be an organic asset for the blue brand. He doesn’t need to be a referendum on former football players turned wrestlers with every match, he can just function as a big strong guy who can anchor a match around better performers. He’ll always have three big “wow factors” in his favor (his agility moving in and out of the ring, his ability to banter while fighting and his Deep Six, which is one of the most gorgeous-looking signatures in the company), so if he can put that together with better match pacing and a few more moves, Corbin could rocket to the top sooner than later. And if his Talking Smack appearances are to be believed, there IS a good talker in there somewhere who just needs to find his promo character to flourish. Once that happens, this mammoth of a heel will be in main events for years to come, and it’ll be the End of Days for Baron Corbin’s haters.
