The Superstars of SmackDown Live, a brand within World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), are coming to Norfolk, Dec. 10, for a live event at Norfolk Scope.

One of the individuals involved is a superstar that’s making an impact each week on SmackDown Live, the “Lone Wolf” Baron Corbin. Prior to his victory at the TLC: Tables Ladders and Chairs pay-per-view over Kalisto in a brutal Chairs Match, Corbin set aside a moment to offer an insight into his WWE career thus far.

Jonathan McLarty (JM): How do you feel the SmackDown Live brand is superior to Monday Night Raw?

Baron Corbin (BC): I think that we have a lot of competitors that are hungry for opportunity. There’s a fire on SmackDown Live that I don’t think Raw has. I think Raw is complacent in the fact that Raw’s been the flagship of WWE. Smackdown wants to be number one. When you’re handed a show like Raw that is the flagship of a company, you can be lazy. I believe we have created something very special and people really enjoy what we have.

JM: I feel like, though Smackdown Live’s broadcast window is one hour less than what Raw has on Monday’s, Talking Smack more than makes up for that. It’s continuous, no commercials, and it allows the Superstar to show their true personality.

BC: One-hundred percent. You walk on there and you have no idea what you’re walking in to. Everything is very pure, everything is raw. It’s an opportunity to be yourself and put yourself out there. That’s how you come across special things. When things come out real, you find that special thing that latches on and launches you all the way to the top.

JM: Do you feel you were presented accurately on the WWE Network series Breaking Ground?

BC: When I was interviewed to do Breaking Ground, they said ‘Hey, this is a real show. This isn’t something that’s scripted where we force you to say things.’ I stayed very true to that. What you saw on Breaking Ground was how I am 95 percent of the time. When I’m behind closed doors with my family, they’re like, ‘We don’t want to watch because we get the sweet side of you.’ Very few people get that side of me. That is a very good representation of my attitude. It’s very focused. I’ve been that way my whole life – through college, the NFL. I like the saying ‘I’m not here to make friends. I’m here to make money and win championships.’ I truly believe that. I have plenty of friends, so when I’m at work or around work, that’s who I am.

JM: With you winning the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal at WrestleMania 32, your first night on the main roster, did that add any pressure to maintain that level of success?

BC: I think, every day, you have that pressure. I was told once that, ‘Everyday you either get better or you get worse. You never stay the same.’ You have to have that mindset that every day, you want to keep getting better. The pressure’s good, it makes you perform. That day, I had 100 some-odd thousand people watching me for my very first opportunity with the main roster. The pressure’s huge to perform because if you don’t, that may have been my first and last opportunity to be out there. That feeling of winning the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal, the feeling is so surreal and unbelievable that you’re going to spend your career chasing moments like that. What is that next opportunity I can get to feel that feeling again?

JM: Whom do you turn backstage at SmackDown Live to talk over your ideas?

BC: We have amazing people that help us backstage, and Arn Anderson is someone I always like to look to. He’s a legend in his own right. Fit Finlay, and guys like that, who can work with you and tailor who you are and what you’re doing in the ring, are unbelievable. I believe that we connect because we have a similar attitude – that blue-collar grind mentality. Arn is a guy who helps me out quite a bit to hone in on how I can be at the top of my game. Arn and Fit are some of the best bad guys who have ever come across a wrestling ring.

JM: Favorite ice cream flavor?

BC: Chocolate peanut butter, no doubt. Everything with peanut butter is better. I used to be 335 pounds when I was playing football, so I’d eat tubs of ice cream like it was my job – tubs of ice cream and milkshakes.

JM: The SmackDown Live crew is coming to Norfolk Scope on Dec. 10, to present a live event that is non-televised and only for the fans in attendance. How does performing at this type of event differ for you than one that is televised?

BC: Live events are something special. They are intimate for the audience and we don’t have to worry about performing for cameras and presenting to the people at home on their couches. The amount of time that you are going to get to see your superstars is a lot more than if it were on TV. You get more of their personality, more interaction. I know I spend a lot of time yelling back and forth with the audience because I enjoy getting yelled at by people. I have a match against Kalisto. We’ve got a good little battle going, so I look forward to seeing if he can make it to Norfolk. We’ll try to go out there and do damage to each other and entertain people who are there wanting to be part of a really awesome show.

Tickets for the WWE Live Holiday Tour at Norfolk Scope can be purchased at all Ticketmaster outlets and the Norfolk Scope box office. Ticket prices are as low as $15 and admission is free to all active military. Currently advertised for this event, in addition to Baron Corbin and Kalisto, are: AJ Styles, Dean Ambrose, Bray Wyatt, Becky Lynch, and more. For the latest WWE news and information, visit WWE.com.

When American Alpha leaves the show, The next topic of conversation is Baron Corbin. How he cost Smackdown Live the cruiserweight division. Bryan calls Baron Corbinselfish. Daniel feels that The Cruiserweight Division is underutilized on Raw and that Smackdown Live would have been the prefect home for that division. Renee agrees with Daniel. Bryan puts over Rich Swann’s background. Says that most people only know about his dancing. Bryan talks about How Swann’s mom and dad died when he was a young man. How he lived alone when he was a teenager…. Bryan says that he couldn’t even make himself a sandwich when he was 15 years old. He says that Rich Swann got into the drug culture when he was a teenager, and what saved him from that lifestyle, was pro wrestling. Bryan calls Rich an incredible human being. Bryan talks about how close, he got to all the talents in the division. Bryan then talks about how being small works against you in the business. How Raw doesn’t do a good job of getting the audience to know the cruiserweights personally. Bryan talks about how this is a star driven business. How fans buy to see stars not just great matches. How the talents in the cruiserweight division, need to be focused on for their backgrounds and personalities.

Bryan gets back to ripping on Baron Corbin. How he is out for himself. Baron Corbin joins the show. Corbin goes right after Bryan verbally. Takes issue with Bryan punishing him, by pitting him against Kane. Then criticizes Bryan for allowing Kalisto to interfere in his match.. Bryan calls out Corbin for his hypocrisy. How he has done the same exact thing. Bryan tells Corbin, that he cost SD Live, The Cruiserweight Division. Baron says that he did the show a favor. Says “Why do you want those little kids here”… Doing flips and tricks… Corbin says that people at home want to see stars like Goldberg, Lesnar and himself rather than the cruiserweights. Corbin says that kids at home don’t want to be like the cruiserweights… Daniel responds by saying, that when he was a kid. He wanted to be Dean Malenko. Bryan says that he looked up to Dean because he could do things that Hulk Hogan and Goldberg could never do. Bryan says that he identified with Dean more than those other stars.

Daniel goes on to say that The WWE isn’t just “One size fits all”…. Corbin disagrees. That it is one size fits all. How if you put “little kids” in the ring with him. How he dominates them. Bryan disputes Corbin by telling him that Kalisto at only 5’3, beat him up on Smackdown Live. Bryan books Corbin vs Kalisto in a chairs match at The TLC PPV.
