Smackdown is now…The Kevin Owens show?: An oddly clean shaven Kevin Owens (in a suit) makes his way to the ring. Owens says that Smackdown has been upgraded and this is now the Kevin Owens show. We should all be thankful that the US Title is in the hands of a Canadian, because Canada is better and Canadians are better athletes. He then mocked that the Bruins lose to the Canadians all the time, and then spoke some French Canadian, and issues an open challenge. He is only here for him and to be the new face of America. Baron Corbin arrives, because one secondary title is as good as the other. Corbin knows Owens can beat down the fans and most of the locker room, but he can’t beat him up. Corbin beat Ambrose last week that he went and hid on Raw, and then Ambrose beat Owens so bad he ran to Smackdown. Owens calls him delusional and won’t give him a title shot. Sami Zayn then arrives, much to the dismay of Owens. Destined to do this forever. Sami says he is finally on Smackdown live, and Corbin says no one cares. This brings out AJ Styles. Great reaction for AJ. AJ says that this is Smackdown, and it’s not about any of the men already in the ring, it’s about him and the house he built. Daniel Bryan then arrived and discusses that Owens will defend against Jericho at payback, and the winner of that match will be on Smackdown. The title will not be defended until after Payback, but Styles, Sami & Corbin will face in a #1 contender’s match to face the winner at Payback.

US Title #1 Contender’s Match: Sami Zayn vs. Baron Corbin vs. AJ Styles: Sami & Styles worked over Corbin to begin, trying to take out the bigger man, but Corbin fought back and suplexed both men at the same time. Corbin tossed Styles to the floor, Sami tried to fire up and attack He used his speed, and then Styles returned and they sent Corbin to the floor. Styles and Sami faced off, they worked a friendly professional wrestling match, with ami sending Styles to the floor and Corbin cutting of his dive and slamming him to the ramp. Styles to the floor and ran into a bug right by Corbin. Zayn fought back, hitting the Arabian moonsault onto both men on the floor as we took a break. Post break, Corbin was in control, working over Styles until Sami made the save. Corbin cut him off quickly, and went back to work on Styles. Corbin is dominating, and looking like a beast, but unfortunately the pacing of the match is dying. Sami again tries to fight back, sends Styles to the floor and then dumps Corbin with the XPLODER. Styles in and cuts off the helluva with the ushigoroshi; Corbin then clotheslines Styles out of his boots. Corbin beat on Sami, but Styles then cut him off with a knee strike and then ran into the blue thunder bomb for the near fall by Sami. Sami set Styles up top, laid into him with chops, and then followed Styles up top. Corbin returned and grabbed Sami on his shoulders, Styles tried to fly in and attack but Sami scored with a victory roll for 2. Corbin then hits deep six, but Styles breaks up the pin. Corbin started to fight back, but ends up posting himself and Styles then hits the springboard 450, but Sami makes the save. Styles and Sami trade rights, Styles then attacks both Sami and Corbin with corner clotheslines, but then Corbin fights back but runs into a boot by Sam and the PELE by Styles. Sami fights off the clash, Corbin gets booted to the floor, but Styles hits the springboard forearm on Sami to pick up the win. AJ Styles defeated Sami Zayn and Baron Corbin @ 16:52 via pin

This Sunday, Baron Corbin will have the biggest match of his young career.

The 32-year-old WWE Superstar will face Dean Ambrose for the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 33 in Orlando. It’s quite an achievement for a man that started his career in a boxing ring and then to an NFL field.

The Fan’s Troy Hughes spent some time with Corbin to talk about his championship match, blocking for Kurt Warner and how he TRULY feels about the possibility of Floyd Maywether fighting Conor McGregor.

Non-Title Street Fight: Champion Dean Ambrose vs. Baron Corbin:

Corbin attacks at the bell, but tried to fight back, only for Corbin to immediately cut him off. Corbin went to get a chair, but Ambrose dropkicked it in his face and hit a suicide dive, sending Corbin over the announce table. Ambrose continued the attack, sending him into the crowd and then followed to continue his assault. Post break, Corbin had control as we have a table and a bunch of chairs in the ring. Corbin then put Ambrose through the table in the corner. Corbin then busted out strap and beat on Ambrose. Ambrose fought back, slamming Corbin head first into a chair that was wedge in the corner. Corbin managed to fight off dirty deeds, but Ambrose fired up and got the strap and laid into him for some revenge. Ambrose is beating the shit out of Corbin and they go to the floor, where Ambrose hits the elbow drop press. We have a table set up on the floor; Ambrose lays him on it and climbs up top and hits the elbow drop and puts Corbin through the table. Corbin fights back, crotches Ambrose and hits end of days for the win.

‘I tease Corey Taylor for being old’ – meet WWE’s most metal superstar

Baron Corbin bigs up metal bands on Twitter, has a move named after Marilyn Manson, and is throwing down at Wrestlemania this Sunday
Whether you’ve started your daily vocal warm-ups in preparation to boo Roman Reigns out of the building or are simply confused by your old mate from school banging on about ‘justice for AJ’ on Facebook, chances are, you know it’s Wrestlemania this Sunday. WWE’s annual hallmark pay-per-view isn’t just by a distance the biggest event in professional wrestling (or ‘sports entertainment’, as they’ve attempted to rebrand it); it’s one of the single biggest media extravaganzas in the world.

Wrestling has long had a strong relationship with rock and metal culture, from heavy bands through the years soundtracking many of WWE’s flagship shows (Ghost, Baroness and Bring Me The Horizon are just a few names to offer songs for their NXT division in the past year), to UK company Progress branding themselves as ‘punk rock pro wrestling’ and featuring a predominantly metal-savvy crowd at their monthly events.

Plus, whichever way you cut it, wrestling has been stacked with metal-as-hell characters over the years, be it the likes of The Undertaker, Kane and Sting, who could all have walked straight out of a Behemoth video, or Hall Of Fame-level names like Stone Cold Steve Austin, Chris Jericho and Triple H regularly repping rock and metal bands outside of the ring.

This crossover appeal reached its zenith in June last year when Metal Hammer awarded Triple H – a current force behind the scenes at WWE as well as in the ring – with the one-off Spirit Of Lemmy Award as a part of our Golden God celebrations. Presented by Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine live on stage at Download, with the NXT superstars watching from the wings, it felt like a natural peak to a connection between cultures that has run for decades.
Watching from sidestage with his NXT colleagues that day was a man who has since not only moved on to become a major force on WWE’s main roster, but has arguably become metal culture’s most faithful rep on the big stage.

“Going out to Download, that show was insane!” beams Baron Corbin of the whole experience today. “From top to bottom; the mud, the rain, NXT being a part of it all, it was one heck of an experience, that’s for sure.”

While many NXT stars onsite that day were experiencing rock culture close up for the first time, Baron is an old hand at our game. He spent his teenagers years watching the likes of Slipknot, Marilyn Manson and White Zombie at Ozzfest, and when he’s not bigging up bands like Korn, Nothing More and Zeal & Ardor on Twitter, he’s donning the threads of metal clothing mega-label Black Craft to the ring. He even has a signature move – Deep Six – in tribute to the Marilyn Manson song of the same, and last year he made international headlines for an ‘altercation’ with Corey Taylor at a festival in the US. With the Smackdown heavyweight repping metalheads around the world at Wrestlemania this Sunday, we caught up with Baron to talk wrasslin’, festivals and heavy freakin’ metal.

How did you get into metal?

“My dad was a rock ‘n’ roll guy; it’s what he loved, and he got me into that world. He got me into being a part of shows and wanting to go and experience them.”

You got your first taste of festival culture at Ozzfest. What was that like?

“When you go to shows like that, and you get to see bands like Ozzy and Manson and White Zombie and Slipknot and System Of A Down, it just tailors your lifestyle. That rock ‘n’ roll music, the emotion of it, it just moulds you. Watching those stacked lineups, those shows were insane. And a lot of those guys are still putting out great stuff! You see the evolution of those guys, and it continues to tailor me as a person.”
What are you listening to at the moment?

“I continue to love my old stuff – Manson and Slipknot and stuff like that – but right now, I think Ghost are unbelievable. Also, Gojira’s newest album is insane, the best stuff they’ve done. I’m loving that record. Also, Sevendust, Highly Suspect and Nothing More, all those dudes are killing it right now.”

Have you caught up with Corey Taylor recently?

“Haha! Yeah, we still throw stuff back and forth at each other. We’re both competitors in our world. I tease him about being old and that I grew up watching Slipknot at Ozzfest, and we argue about who does better at selling tickets in arenas. That’s great competition for me and him. He’s doing well; I talked to him the other day and they’re working on new stuff for Stone Sour, and that’s gonna be sick. He’s always on the move and doing great stuff.”

The fallout from that whole thing really opened people’s eyes to the crossover between metal and wrestling. Did you realise how big that story was gonna get?

“I had no idea how much that was gonna blow up. I grew up going to rock shows, and the lines of rock ‘n’ roll cross over with wrestling so much. Wrestling is an opportunity to go to a show, be a part of it and feel the emotions, from anger to frustration to sadness to pain – everything that music can make you feel.

So the crossover between audiences is unbelievable, and when the two industries collide, and you have one of their biggest guys in Corey, crashing into one of our biggest superstars, and he hits me in the teeth, it’s cool to see! And maybe it opens a few eyes for people that didn’t look at wrestling or didn’t look at that kind of music, and it helps us both.”

Are you ready for Wrestlemania this Sunday?

“I’m ready to rock! I’m facing Dean Ambrose for the Intercontinental Championship, and hopefully I’m gonna win and start my own little Wrestlemania streak. The lead-up to Wrestlemania is always crazy, because you have all these guys fighting for an opportunity to be a part of the show, and get an opportunity to cement themselves in the Wrestlemania history books. It’s the culmination of your year, the biggest show for us. Last year, my Mania debut was my debut on the main roster, so it was unexpected. I didn’t have time to build up to it or anything like that. It was just, ‘Hey, here’s the fire, jump in’. But I went out, I won the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royale, and that launched me on the main roster and did a lot of great things for me. So Mania is a really good chance to go and show everyone who you are.”

You mentioned making a big impact in your Mania debut last year by winning one of the show’s biggest matches – how hard was it keeping that momentum going?

“I just knew it was an opportunity to project me to where I wanted to go. And it puts pressure on you to perform. I genuinely believe that every single day, you can either get better or you can get worse, and that was one hell of a place to have to get better from. Plus, performing under pressure is when I’m at my best. It’s what I do. I played football [Baron played at college level and was drafted in the NFL], I’m a professional wrestler, I like it when all eyes are on me. I love to be able to rub someone’s face in my own success when they tell me I can’t do something. That’s a little vindictive if you will, but I guess that’s why I’m good at what I do – pissing people off and beating up heroes, haha!”

Wrestlemania takes place this Sunday at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida. You can stream it live on the WWE Network.

-Moving on to the IC Title feud and Renee mentions that Ambrose and Corbin can’t even be in the same room at this point. They show the splint screen interview with the two from earlier in the day. Ambrose is the cool and calm dude as always while Corbin wants to make Dean suffer. He enjoys looking in a man’s eyes and seeing the moment when he breaks. Dean says there is only two things he is scared about: tarantula hawks and lyme disease. He does a great job of balancing being serious and making jokes. Baron stays on point while Dean continues to crack jokes about Baron being boring. Dean gets pissed and goes to get a remote and turns Baron off the screen. Cute!

-Renee wishes there was a real life mute button and that brings Corbin. He is pisses as you would expect and says he will beat Ambrose in the head with the remote if he has to. When he is done with Ambrose he will go back to stapling dollar bills to his forehead in front of a dozen people. Baron says he is part of the 1% as he was playing in the NFL while Dean was wrestling in bingo halls in death matches. Baron is the future and drops the mic as he leaves. Good promo there!

-Dean says that Baron could be the future, but he feels Dean is the present. We wrap things up and Bryan gets in one last subtle shot at the Ultimate Thrill Ride tag line.

-Baron brought some good life to the show which upgraded this to a good episode instead of just an average show. Even an average Talking Smack is still the best show in the WWE though.

Back from the break and Bryan is on the phone with Shane. Bryan informs Shane that AJ will be waiting for him in the parking lot. It sounds like Shane has a plan. Bryan says he supports Shane 100%. Baron Corbin walks in and wants to know about Dean Ambrose accepting his challenge for WrestleMania. Bryan says he hasn’t heard from Ambrose in a few weeks, thanks to Corbin. Corbin thinks he has the night off but Bryan books him in a match against Randy Orton.

Baron Corbin vs. Randy Orton

We go to the ring and out comes Baron Corbin. We go to commercial.
Back from the break and we see Corbin’s recent attack on WWE Intercontinental Champion Dean Ambrose. Randy Orton is out next for his first match against Corbin. They lock up and go at it. Corbin drops Orton first with a shoulder. They run the ropes and Corbin blocks an RKO attempt. Corbin goes to the floor for a breather.
Corbin comes back in and they go at it. Orton takes control and stomps away while Corbin is down. Orton keeps control and sends Corbin back to the floor. Orton reaches for Corbin over the top rope but Corbin runs him into the ring post. Corbin comes back in and stands tall over Orton. Corbin talks some trash and fans boo as we go back to commercial.
Back from the break and Corbin is still in control. He covers for a 2 count. Corbin keeps control and floors Orton with a big clothesline. Corbin works Orton around as fans try to rally for Orton. Corbin runs into a boot and Orton makes his comeback. Corbin counters the powerslam. Back and forth again. Corbin runs into the ring but Orton catches him with the powerslam. Orton comes back with a Full Nelson slam for a close 2 count.
Corbin ends up avoiding the DDT and they go to the floor. They use the barrier and the steel steps. Orton brings it back into the ring and hits the second rope draping DDT. Orton gets a pop as he readies for the RKO. Corbin blocks it and catches Orton with a Deep Six for a close 2 count. Corbin ends up running into the steel steps on the floor. They come back into the ring and the finish comes when WWE Intercontinental Champion Dean Ambrose drives a forklift to the stage area. Orton takes advantage of the distraction and hits the RKO for the win.

Winner: Randy Orton

After the match, Ambrose makes his way to the ring. He grants Corbin the match at WrestleMania 33 and lays him out with Dirty Deeds. The music hits and Ambrose leaves while Corbin recovers.

Baron Corbin was a guest on The Bob and Tom Show, which you can watch in its entirety in the video above. Here are some of the highlights:

His tattoos:

“My first one was terrible, it’s Chinese symbol on my back, I hope it means ‘Strength.’ Then, I think I got a giant dragon on my leg, my legs are covered. Nobody gets to see my legs, but there covered, I got all kinds of stuff down there from Candy Man and Jack ‘The Ripper,’ portraits of my Dad and Grandpa.”

PG language in WWE:

“Yeah, ya know, I tailor that [to] ‘PG.’ I mean with anything, emotions get high, we’re very competitive with what we do, everybody wants to be the best, so, sometimes those emotions will get the best of you and you’ll let a word fly and you’ll hear about it later. So, ya know, better to ask for forgiveness than permission, right?”

How much of the “Baron Corbin” persona is him:

“I mean that attitude, that persona I carry is something I’ve always had with me, I mean, that’s what made me successful, especially in football and is making me successful now. In college, practice is draggin’ Coach goes, ‘Oh hey, go on over there and start a fight with one of the Linebackers.’ Okay. So I’ll go and start a fight with one of the Linebackers…It’s just an attitude that really developed in me and now we just amplify it times 100 and make sure everybody understands what I do and what I’m about.”

Baron Corbin also discussed his time in football and favorite music. You can hear the full interview by watching the video above.
