Baron Corbin def. AJ Styles and Tye Dillinger to become the new United States Champion
DETROIT — Technically, Baron Corbin didn’t take any shortcuts to become the new United States Champion. He pinned a Superstar, clean as a whistle, 1-2-3, to earn his first title in WWE. He just didn’t pin the United States Champion.
After SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan added Tye Dillinger to what had originally been a battle between Corbin and reigning titleholder AJ Styles, Corbin found himself outnumbered and targeted by two Superstars who were very open about their mutual respect for one another. And given that Dillinger had finagled his way into the match off the strength of a pinfall win over Corbin this past week on SmackDown LIVE, he posed just as significant a challenge to The Lone Wolf’s championship aspirations as The Phenomenal One.
Yet the former Mr. Money in the Bank played the situation right from the beginning, sitting back and letting Styles and Dillinger tee off on each other before picking the bones of whomever was left standing. In one particularly genius sequence, Corbin even launched Styles into Dillinger, then slid The Phenomenal One face-first into the ring post. The Lone Wolf focused the most intense of his efforts on Styles in order to isolate Dillinger, but The Phenomenal One brawled his way back into the match for a one-on-one throwdown.
While Styles got a little too ambitious with an attempt at a Styles Clash, he was still able to clock Corbin with a knee to the head on the outside. Dillinger immediately threw himself into the fray and found himself trapped in a Calf Crusher, though Corbin pulled him to the outside to prevent a tapout. A three-way brawl followed, and Styles seemed to have the final upper hand after connecting with a Phenomenal Forearm on The Perfect 10. Before AJ could cover Dillinger, however, Corbin viciously booted him out of the ring and covered Tye for the pin.
As Corbin himself mentioned on Talking Smack, that’s a win that won’t sit well with the WWE Universe. And perhaps it shouldn’t. Styles losing his title without getting pinned does seem like something of an injustice. But as Baron Corbin knows better than anyone, life can be unfair, and sometimes respect must be taken.

AJ Styles defends the United States Championship against Baron Corbin tonight on SmackDown LIVE
After attacking AJ Styles last week on Sin City SmackDown, Baron Corbin will get his opportunity to try and dethrone The Phenomenal One tonight, when he challenges for the United States Championship.
The Lone Wolf has been stalking Styles and his star-spangled championship since the Tuesday after SummerSlam, when he tried to get guaranteed title matches from both Kevin Owens and Styles. When he refereed a title bout between the two later that night, Corbin and Styles butted heads after they inadvertently collided.
Corbin attempted to answer Styles’ United States Open Challenge one week later, but was beaten to the punch by Tye Dillinger. Corbin retaliated by attacking The Perfect 10, but could not keep him from answering the challenge. The blindside attack did keep Dillinger from defeating Styles. Corbin went on to defeat Dillinger the following week, but found himself shut out of the title picture again, as Styles gave a fair rematch to The Perfect 10.
This time, Corbin waited until after The Phenomenal One had defeated Dillinger to make his presence felt on Sin City SmackDown. The Lone Wolf struck, steamrolling over both men before planting Styles into the arena floor with End of Days before announcing his intention of coming for the U.S. Title.
Will The Lone Wolf assert his dominance and capture the United States Championship, or will AJ Styles’ phenomenal reign continue? Find out on SmackDown LIVE, tonight at 8/7 C on USA Network!

WWE Backlash PPV Kick-off Show Results – September 11th, 2016

Baron Corbin def. Apollo Crews
After mocking Apollo Crews backstage earlier in the evening, Baron Corbin backed up his words by beating the talented Superstar one-two-three in the middle of the ring on Backlash Kickoff.
The two New Era standouts both came out with something to prove and clearly wanting to establish themselves on the SmackDown LIVE depth chart. Crews’ athletic ability and explosive offensive proved to be a fascinating clash of styles against Corbin’s brute strength and ground-and-pound preferences.
Crews withstood a ton of punishment from The Lone Wolf, including a huge clothesline that turned him inside out, but he fired back with several major maneuvers including a running knee strike and his patented standing moonsault.Crews appeared to be in firm control after hitting a big Samoan Drop on the outside. But Corbin was able to recover and surged in the match’s final moments, first kneeing Crews in the face and then connecting flush with End of Days to secure the victory in an incredibly hard-fought contest.
